January 5th, 2014 - How to do a handstand

Oil and water. The Light Side and the Dark Side. Superman and Kryptonite. Lars and gymnastics.

These are just a few examples of things that do not mix.

Balance. Coordination. The ability to not break things in my path.

These are just a few examples of why doing a handstand had not been advisable for me in the past.  However, today I tried to move beyond that.  I enlisted the help of Whitney Belk, former UNCW gymnast and cheerleader, to help me learn the art of the handstand.  Results...varied...

Whitney, by far, was the most peppy and upbeat of the gurus that I have had thus far.  I guess it's the former cheerleader in her, but I really felt like I was doing a good job with the handstand.  Even as I was wrecking her complex's clubhouse.

It's a difficult thing to do, and a lot harder than I remembered from elementary school (the addition of beer weight probably didn't help matters). And yes, I was very embarrassed by my efforts at first, and my face turned as red as my hoodie.  But embarrassment, or the threat of possible embarrassment, can often get in the way of some great adventures.  While I may not have mastered it this go around, I won't let the thought of me crashing into a wall stop me from trying a handstand again.  Because after all, aside from a little property damage, I survived.

It's sad how many times that sentence can be applied to my life.

Other things I learned/looked up today:
1) The Carolina Hurricanes locker room really, really smells (The gentleman sitting behind me was loudly shouting this to his wife during the game)

  1. This made my day today. Thanks Lars (and Whitney)! I kind of want to go home and try this against the wall of my apartment… It will not be filmed.
